Can't find your question?

A few things we get asked most often. If your question isn't here, our team is happy to talk it through.

Austrian Audio is based in Vienna, Austria. The company was founded in 2017 by a core team of former AKG engineers after AKG’s Vienna operation closed. That founding team brought experience in acoustics, transducers, electronics, test and measurement, software and mechanical design, giving the relatively young brand a deep engineering heritage from the outset.

Austrian Audio is best known for professional and high-end headphones, microphones and headphone amplification developed around its own transducer and acoustic technologies. Its hi-fi range includes models such as The Composer and The Arranger, while the Hi-X family is widely used for studio monitoring, mixing and critical listening.

Hi-X stands for High Excursion. Austrian Audio developed its 44mm Hi-X driver around a ring-magnet system and a copper-clad aluminium voice coil, reducing moving mass and allowing the diaphragm to respond quickly to changes in the signal. The design is intended to deliver fast transients, controlled bass and low distortion across the Hi-X headphone range.

Closed-back models such as the Hi-X60 are designed to provide greater isolation and reduce sound leakage, which suits recording, monitoring and listening in shared environments. Open-back models such as the Hi-X65 allow more airflow around the driver and are designed for a wider, more spacious presentation, making them particularly suitable for mixing, mastering and focused home listening.

The Composer is Austrian Audio’s premium reference headphone and uses a larger 49mm Hi-X driver with a diamond-like-carbon-coated diaphragm. It is an open-back design created for high-end listening and professional reference use, with very low distortion, a lightweight construction and a more ambitious acoustic platform than the standard Hi-X professional range.

True Transient Technology, or TTT, is a proprietary circuit used in Austrian Audio’s Full Score one headphone amplifier. When activated, it reduces the amplifier’s rise time and is designed to reproduce sudden musical transients more accurately. The amplifier itself is fully discrete, with no integrated circuits in the signal path, and is designed to drive headphones across a wide range of impedances.

Not always. Many Hi-X models have relatively low impedance and high sensitivity, so they can work well from capable portable players, DACs and conventional headphone outputs. A reference model such as The Composer can also be driven from a range of sources, but Austrian Audio specifically developed the Full Score one as its matching high-end amplifier for listeners wanting to maximise performance.

Yes. The brand deliberately spans both areas. Hi-X models are designed for applications such as recording, monitoring, mixing and mastering, while Austrian Audio’s dedicated hi-fi products focus more strongly on reference home listening. The common thread is an emphasis on low distortion, accurate transient response and revealing rather than heavily coloured sound.

Yes. Premium Sound’s London headphone shop carries Austrian Audio alongside other audiophile headphone brands, and display headphones can be auditioned before purchase. If you want to hear a specific Austrian Audio model, it is sensible to contact the store first to confirm that particular headphone is currently available for demonstration.

For hi-fi listeners, Austrian Audio offers a refreshing alternative to the usual headphone brands. Its designs tend to focus on clarity, control and long-term listening comfort rather than an overly hyped sound. The brand’s headphone range includes professional closed-back models, open-back reference headphones and more premium home-listening designs, giving music lovers options for private listening, desktop systems and serious headphone setups.

Austrian Audio’s professional background is part of what makes the brand interesting. The company is not simply styling headphones for the hi-fi market. It has roots in studio monitoring, microphone design and measurement-led product development, so its products are built with a clear understanding of how sound is recorded as well as how it is played back. That gives its headphones a precise, revealing character without making them feel cold or clinical.

The brand has also expanded further into the premium hi-fi space, including reference headphones and dedicated headphone amplification. This makes Austrian Audio a strong choice for listeners who want a serious wired headphone system with a properly engineered feel, whether used with a DAC, headphone amplifier, streamer or desktop hi-fi setup.

At Premium Sound, the Austrian Audio range is suited to customers looking for well-made headphones with a clean, articulate sound, strong comfort and genuine audio heritage. From studio-influenced models to higher-end hi-fi headphones, Austrian Audio brings a thoughtful Austrian approach to personal listening.
