A few things we get asked most often. If your question isn't here, our team is happy to talk it through.

HEDD is a Berlin-based German audio company founded in 2015 by physicist Klaus Heinz and his son Dr Frederik Knop. Its headphones are designed, hand-assembled and tested in Berlin, where HEDD also develops its proprietary driver technologies.

HEDD is particularly known for bringing Air Motion Transformer technology into full-range headphones. The original HEDDphone became the first headphone to use a full-range AMT driver, while the current range now also includes the D1, which takes a different approach with a Thin-Ply Carbon dynamic driver.

The biggest difference is the driver. HEDDphone TWO uses HEDD’s full-range Air Motion Transformer with VVT technology, while D1 uses a conventional dynamic architecture built around an ultra-thin carbon diaphragm. D1 is also much easier to drive, making it more flexible with portable sources, while HEDDphone TWO is aimed at more demanding desktop and reference systems.

Variable Velocity Transform, or VVT, changes the width and depth of the folds within HEDD’s Air Motion Transformer diaphragm. This allows the AMT to reproduce the full audio spectrum rather than operating only as a tweeter. HEDD first introduced the technology with the original HEDDphone and refined it further for HEDDphone TWO.

Both use HEDD’s full-range AMT technology and share the same basic headphone platform, but the TWO GT is tuned more specifically for high-end music listening. The standard TWO has a stronger professional and studio focus, while GT is intended for listeners who want a slightly more refined, music-first presentation from the same core technology.

It depends on the model. HEDDphone TWO is rated at 41 ohms but HEDD recommends at least 200mW and around 1W or more for optimum performance, so a capable headphone amplifier is worthwhile. The D1 is considerably easier to drive at 32 ohms and 100dB sensitivity, making it much more comfortable with portable players and compact DAC/amps.

HEDD headphones stand apart through their use of Air Motion Transformer technology, which gives them a fast, open and highly responsive sound. Rather than chasing exaggerated bass or an overly coloured presentation, HEDD focuses on precision, texture and control. The result is a style of headphone that can show the fine details in a recording while still keeping the music engaging and natural.

For customers looking at high-end headphones, HEDD Audio offers an interesting alternative to more familiar dynamic and planar magnetic designs. The sound is clean and spacious, with a sense of scale that suits well-recorded music, acoustic instruments, vocals and complex arrangements. They are also well suited to listeners who want headphones that can handle long, focused sessions without masking what is happening in the recording.

The HEDD Audio headphone range is a good fit for anyone searching for open-back headphones, reference headphones, AMT headphones or premium hi-fi headphones with a more technical, transparent sound. With its roots in serious audio engineering and a clear commitment to accuracy, HEDD has become a respected name for people who want headphones that feel honest, detailed and carefully considered.
