Klipsch was founded by Paul W. Klipsch in Hope, Arkansas, in 1946 and is now headquartered in Indianapolis. The company continues to design and engineer its loudspeakers in the USA, while manufacturing location varies by range. The Heritage models remain closely tied to Hope, Arkansas, where speakers such as Klipschorn, La Scala, Cornwall and Heresy are assembled and finished by hand.

Horn-loaded loudspeakers are central to Klipsch’s identity. Paul W. Klipsch built the company around high efficiency, controlled directivity and low distortion, and those principles still influence everything from Heritage speakers to modern home cinema ranges. The result is a brand particularly associated with strong dynamics and the ability to produce high output without demanding extreme amplifier power.

A horn helps control how high-frequency energy is directed into the room while also increasing acoustic efficiency. Klipsch’s Tractrix horn designs are intended to reduce unwanted reflections from walls and keep more of the sound aimed towards the listening area, helping with clarity, dynamics and consistent dispersion.

Heritage is the traditional side of Klipsch, built around designs and engineering principles that go back to Paul W. Klipsch’s original loudspeakers. Reference and Reference Premiere are more contemporary ranges designed to cover modern stereo and home cinema systems at a wider range of prices. Heritage also places greater emphasis on large cabinets, very high sensitivity and US production.

Many Klipsch speakers are unusually efficient, so high wattage is not always necessary. This can make them a good match for everything from modest integrated amplifiers to lower-powered valve designs, although larger rooms and higher listening levels still benefit from greater power reserves. Amplifier quality and system matching matter more than choosing the highest wattage figure available.

Home cinema is a major part of the current Klipsch range. Reference and Reference Premiere include matching centre, surround, Atmos and subwoofer options, while the custom-install and THX ranges provide solutions for in-wall and in-ceiling systems. This makes it possible to build a multichannel system while keeping a consistent speaker family across the room.

Placement depends heavily on the model. Compact Reference speakers can work in fairly conventional rooms, while some Heritage models are physically much larger and may have more specific positioning requirements. Klipschorn, for example, was originally designed around corner placement, whereas newer generations are less dependent on using the room walls as part of the bass horn.

An audition is especially useful with Klipsch because the presentation of a horn-loaded speaker can be easier to understand in person than from specifications alone. Klipsch was founded in 1946 by American engineer and audio pioneer Paul W. Klipsch in a small tin shed in Hope, Arkansas, USA. Dissatisfied with the sound produced by speakers of the time, Paul applied his knowledge of engineering and physics to develop and patent the corner-horn speaker design.

The company was founded on four basic principles that still drive the design of every Klipsch speaker:

  • High Efficiency: Every speaker in the line has an interior horn-shaped design that provides accurate and dynamic sound transmission.
  • Low Distortion: Klipsch speakers promise high sensitivity with a wide dynamic range for quiet and louder sounds. Klipsch speakers have exceptional clarity and even the softest sounds will be heard with detail, whilst the loudest sounds will have no distortion.
  • Controlled Directivity: The horn drivers in Klipsch speakers have controlled directivity which creates the perfect natural soundstage.
  • Flat Frequency Response: Klipsch speakers deliver the most accurate sound and provide an exceptional balance between bass, mid-range, and treble sounds so that the sound delivered is exactly what the musician or artist envisioned.

Paul Klipsch aimed to reproduce the natural sound and dynamics of a live performance in a living room. The Heritage line was first introduced by Paul and still includes flagship models such as the Klipschorn, La Scala, Cornwall and Heresy. The Klipschorn has been a real breakthrough since it’s invention and remains one of the most legendary and highly praised products as the only loudspeaker that has been in continuous production for more than 70 years.
