Ø Audio

Ø Audio is a Norwegian high-end loudspeaker manufacturer founded by acoustic designer Sveinung Mala and industrial designer Jonathan Cook. The brand was established to deliver the high sensitivity and unrestricted dynamics of live music without the harshness often associated with traditional horn speakers. By blending classic horn-loaded acoustics with clean Scandinavian design, Ø Audio creates distinctive, high-performance loudspeakers built for standard home environments. Read more info ↓

A few things we get asked most often. If your question isn't here, our team is happy to talk it through.

Ø Audio is a Norwegian high-end loudspeaker manufacturer based in Norway. Its loudspeakers are manufactured in Norway, with the company keeping production closely connected to its acoustic engineering and product development rather than operating as a purely design-led brand using outsourced finished speakers.

Ø Audio is best known for high-efficiency loudspeakers that combine large drivers with controlled-directivity horn technology. The aim is to retain the scale, immediacy and dynamics associated with horn speakers while avoiding the narrow sweet spot and obvious colouration sometimes associated with traditional horn designs.

The company specifically designs its horn and waveguide systems to avoid an overly forward or coloured presentation. Controlled directivity helps manage how sound spreads into the room, while the driver and crossover designs are intended to keep the tonal balance smooth both on and off axis. Listening for yourself is still the best way to decide whether that presentation suits you.

High sensitivity is one of the advantages of the Ø Audio approach. Models such as the Icon 12 and Ymir combine sensitivity above 90dB with an 8-ohm nominal impedance, allowing them to work with lower-powered valve amplifiers as well as Class A, Class A/B and modern Class D designs. Amplifier quality and system matching therefore matter more than chasing very high wattage.

Despite their large drivers and substantial cabinets, the speakers are designed with domestic listening spaces in mind. Controlled dispersion helps limit unnecessary interaction with the room, while cabinet geometry and crossover tuning are developed for real-world placement rather than only ideal laboratory conditions. The larger models will naturally need more physical space and listening distance.

The Ø Audio Icon 12 is available for demonstration at Premium Sound’s London showroom. Frigg 02, Verdande and Ymir are available to order, and demonstrations of those models can also be arranged on request through the manufacturer. For a speaker range at this level, arranging the audition in advance is particularly worthwhile.

he brand’s engineering focuses on high-efficiency, multi-way systems featuring custom carbon fiber drivers, proprietary waveguides, and minimal crossover networks. This design philosophy results in a highly linear impedance curve and high sensitivity, allowing the speakers to be easily driven by a wide variety of amplification, from low-powered tube designs to high-current solid-state electronics.

Every Ø Audio loudspeaker is built in Norway with an emphasis on structural rigidity and resonance control. From the original Icon model to the reference-level Ymir and Verdande towers, the cabinets feature asymmetric geometry to eliminate internal standing waves. This careful engineering ensures a highly transparent, non-fatiguing soundstage that preserves the scale and timing of the original recording.
