Can't find your question?

A few things we get asked most often. If your question isn't here, our team is happy to talk it through.

Shanling is a Chinese audio company founded in 1988. Its main offices are in Shenzhen, while the company states that its factory is located in Dongguan, where it combines research, development and production across portable and home audio products.

Shanling began with traditional hi-fi electronics but is now particularly well known for portable digital audio players and compact digital components. Its current Premium Sound range reflects both sides of the brand, combining DAPs and an in-ear monitor with DAC and CD playback products.

A dedicated DAP combines music storage, digital conversion and headphone amplification in one device, without relying on a phone’s audio hardware. Current Shanling players can also support local files, streaming apps, Bluetooth and USB DAC operation, so they can remain convenient while providing more capable headphone outputs and greater system flexibility.

That depends on the model, but Shanling designs its current players around a wide range of headphone loads. Models such as the M8T provide multiple gain settings and substantial output power, allowing the same player to be used with sensitive earphones as well as more demanding full-size headphones. Matching still matters, particularly with very sensitive IEMs or difficult planar designs.

A CD player includes its own digital-to-analogue conversion and can connect directly to an amplifier through analogue outputs. A transport focuses on reading the disc and sending a digital signal to an external DAC. In Shanling’s current range, products such as the CD80 II operate as complete players, while the ET3 EVO and higher-end transports are intended primarily for use with an external digital converter.

Some can. For example, the CD80 II adds USB playback, USB DAC functionality and Bluetooth input, while Shanling’s transport designs can offer additional digital and network features alongside disc playback. The exact connectivity varies considerably between models, so it is worth choosing around whether CD is your only source or part of a wider digital system.

Premium Sound currently carries selected Shanling DAPs, IEMs, DAC and CD components, with dedicated headphone and hi-fi demonstration facilities at the Kensington store. An audition is particularly useful when comparing player output power, headphone matching or deciding whether a complete CD player or separate transport-and-DAC setup makes more sense. Availability of the exact model is worth confirming before visiting.

For listeners who want better sound away from a traditional hi-fi system, Shanling offers a strong route into high-resolution audio. Its portable music players are designed for people who still care about file quality, headphone pairing and proper output stages, rather than relying only on a phone and a basic adaptor. Across the range, Shanling products often support high-resolution formats, balanced headphone outputs, Bluetooth connectivity and USB DAC use, making them practical for both wired headphones and modern wireless listening.

Shanling has also built a loyal following among headphone users because its products sit in a useful space between convenience and serious performance. A Shanling DAP can act as a dedicated source for IEMs and over-ear headphones, while its portable DAC/amps give smartphones, laptops and tablets a cleaner, more capable audio output. For many customers, that makes Shanling a sensible upgrade when they want more detail, more drive and a more focused listening experience without moving to a full-size desktop system.
