About Ø Audio
Ø Audio is a Norwegian high-end loudspeaker manufacturer based in Lier, near Oslo. The company was founded on a single-minded idea: build a small number of horn-loaded designs and refine them relentlessly rather than chase a broad catalogue. The name uses the Norwegian letter ø, pronounced roughly like the vowel sound in “fur”.
The company is led by Sveinung Mala, who heads loudspeaker engineering and acoustic development, alongside Jonathan Magnus Cook, who looks after international distribution and market strategy. Its first product, the original Icon, arrived in 2017 and built a cult following over eight years on the market. That reputation has grown further since the brand began showing at major international events, including High End Munich and the Florida International Audio Expo, where the second-generation Icon 12 made its debut.
Sonically, Ø Audio pursues a specific goal: the effortless scale, immediacy and dynamics of a horn design, but without the coloration and narrow sweet spot that horns are often criticised for. The house approach centres on proprietary drivers, constant-directivity horn geometry for wide and even dispersion, and asymmetrical cabinets with no parallel internal walls to reduce resonance and internal reflections. The result is a presentation that stays composed at low levels and keeps its poise when pushed hard.
The Ø Audio range
Ø Audio keeps its line-up deliberately focused. Four floorstanding models are currently offered, all built around the brand’s horn and driver philosophy.
- Frigg 02 — The most accessible way into the range. A three-way floorstander pairing a carbon-fibre dome tweeter with a midrange and woofer, voiced for high sensitivity and easy amplifier matching.
- Icon 12 — The two-way horn loudspeaker at the heart of this announcement, and the model available to audition at Premium Sound. Full detail below.
- Verdande — A larger, more ambitious floorstander positioned above the Icon 12 for bigger rooms and systems built for maximum scale.
- Ymir — A high-sensitivity design well suited to low-powered valve amplification, including single-ended 300B amplifiers, while remaining happy with more powerful partners.
The Icon 12 is on demonstration now. The Frigg 02, Verdande and Ymir can be supplied to order, and a demonstration of those models can be arranged on request.
Ø Audio Icon 12
The Icon 12 is the second-generation revision of the loudspeaker that established the brand. It keeps the recognisable silhouette of the original but is a completely new design. It is a two-way, horn-loaded floorstander built around a large in-house woofer and a compression driver mounted in Ø Audio’s own constant-directivity horn.
High frequencies are handled by a 3.4-inch carbon-fibre-diaphragm compression driver, chosen for low distortion and speed. Rather than a conventional horn, it sits in the brand’s Quad Vertex Sound Field constant-directivity horn, a geometry designed to give controlled, even dispersion that integrates cleanly into a normal room. Low frequencies come from a 12-inch ultra-linear, long-stroke woofer developed to reach deep and stay composed as levels rise, while still blending cleanly into the midrange.
With a sensitivity of 92 dB and a nominal 8-ohm impedance, the Icon 12 is easy to drive. It pairs well with low-power tube amplifiers as well as conventional Class A/AB and modern Class D designs, so it suits a wide range of systems. The asymmetrical cabinet and aluminium outriggers are built for stability and room-friendly placement.
