The C54 is the four-channel version of Hegel’s C5 series, built on the same modular platform as the C53 and C55: a rack-mount chassis populated with independent amplifier modules, four in this case, each a self-contained 150-watt amplifier with its own power supply. Four channels is a useful number in a cinema, enough for four surrounds, or for the four height channels of an Atmos layout, or for a pair of speakers bi-amped. It is the middle configuration of the range, and it combines with other C5 units as a system grows.

Brief product overview

A four-channel power amplifier built on Hegel’s modular C5 platform, each channel an independent module with its own oversized toroidal power supply. Each channel delivers 150 watts into 8 ohms, doubling to 300 watts into 4 ohms and 600 watts into 2 ohms, with a minimum load of 2 ohms. Hegel’s patented SoundEngine2 cancels distortion in real time, and the damping factor exceeds 2000. Every channel has balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA inputs, with individually switchable gain, 23dB or 29dB, and individually switchable phase, which makes integration and system matching straightforward, including bi-amping and active crossover work. There is a 12-volt trigger input and output for daisy-chaining several units. The chassis is 3U and rack-mountable, with integrated rack ears and adjustable detachable rear mounting ears, and feet supplied for free-standing use. It is made in Norway.

How it sounds

The C54 has Hegel’s clean, neutral, honest character, and the independent per-channel power supplies mean each channel holds its full power and grip no matter how hard the others are working, so a busy Atmos mix stays composed rather than compressing. Doubling into lower impedances gives it authority on demanding speakers, including the in-ceiling and on-wall designs often used for surrounds and heights, which can be harder to drive than their size suggests. SoundEngine2 keeps it smooth and natural. As a pure power amplifier it takes its character from the processor and speakers and amplifies faithfully.

What we’d partner it with

The C54 needs an AV processor in front of it and speakers to drive. We pair it with the Anthem AVM70, a processor supporting layouts up to 15.4, feeding the amplifiers on balanced connections. Four channels make the C54 a natural partner for another C5 unit: with a C53 it totals seven channels for a 7.1 layout, and a C55 with a pair of C54s totals thirteen channels for a full 9.1.4 Atmos system.

For speakers, a timbre-matched package works best, and from the brands we carry, Focal, Sonus faber, KEF, Monitor Audio, Dynaudio, Amphion and Fyne Audio all offer floorstanders, centres, surrounds and height speakers to build a matched system, with subwoofers from REL, SVS or KEF. Subwoofers carry their own amplification, so they do not draw channels from the C5 units.

Who shouldn’t buy it

If you want one amplifier to cover a whole 5.1 system, the five-channel C55 does it in a single chassis. If you only need three channels for a front stage, the C53 costs less and takes the same rack space. And if your system is two-channel, Hegel’s H20 or H30A are the amplifiers for that, where the C5 series is built for multichannel and custom installation.

The C54 is a 3U rack-mount component; Hegel recommends 1U of clear space above and below it in a rack, and feet are supplied if you would rather stand it free. Assign its four channels to the surrounds or the height speakers, or use them to bi-amp a pair of speakers. Set the gain and phase switches per channel to match the rest of the system, and use the 12-volt trigger output to daisy-chain further units so everything powers up together. Run the processor to the amplifier on balanced connections where you can.
