The MC257 is McIntosh’s 7-channel Autoformer power amplifier, and the workhorse of a full McIntosh home cinema. Seven channels of Autoformer-equipped power drive a 7.1 system, or the main bed of a larger immersive layout, and the amplifier gives more power to the three front channels where it matters most. It brings McIntosh’s stereo-amplifier technologies to home theatre at scale, and it is the natural partner for the company’s 13.2-channel processors. It is a power amplifier, so it needs an AV processor in front of it and speakers to drive.

Brief product overview

A 7-channel solid-state power amplifier delivering 200 watts per channel with all seven driven, and 250 watts on the front three channels, with McIntosh’s Autoformer output ensuring full power into 2, 4 or 8 ohms alike. Power Guard prevents audible clipping and Sentry Monitor protects each channel, and a Dynamic Power Manager helps deliver power where it is needed. There are balanced and unbalanced inputs, Solid Cinch binding posts, and a TripleView power output meter showing multiple channels at once. How it sounds

The MC257 brings McIntosh’s composed, authoritative character to a full home cinema, with the Autoformer output driving demanding speakers without strain and the extra power on the front three channels giving dialogue and the loudest effects real weight. Seven channels of 200-plus watts give a large system the headroom to stay effortless through the most demanding soundtracks, and the quality carries through to multichannel and stereo music. As a power amplifier its character comes from the processor and speakers, but it supplies the McIntosh power and grip that define a serious cinema.

What we’d partner it with

The MC257 needs an AV processor and speakers. It is the natural amplifier for McIntosh’s larger processors, the 13.2-channel MX123A or the flagship 15.1-channel MX180, driving the main seven channels, with a further amplifier such as the MI347 added for the surround and overhead channels of a larger immersive layout. For speakers, a timbre-matched package from Sonus faber, Focal, Monitor Audio, KEF or Fyne Audio, with subwoofers from REL, SVS or KEF, completes the system.

Who shouldn’t buy it

If a 5.1 system is all you need, the 5-channel MC255 covers it for less. If you want reference power on the front three channels specifically, and a separate amplifier for the rest, the MC303 is the reference three-channel choice. And if you would rather not run separate amplifiers, the MHT300 receiver builds seven channels in.

Setup notes: The MC257 is large and heavy and wants ventilation above and around it. Connect each speaker to the Autoformer tap that matches its impedance, and run the processor to the amplifier on balanced cables where you can. Assign the seven channels to the main bed of your layout, and add a further amplifier for surround or overhead channels beyond seven. The meter and logo can be dimmed or turned off.
