The MC8207 is a 7-channel Autoformer power amplifier, offering seven channels of McIntosh home theatre power in a single chassis. It brings the Autoformer output and the protection circuits that define McIntosh’s amplifiers to a full 7.1 system, or the main bed of a larger layout, and it is a substantial, capable home cinema amplifier. It is a power amplifier, so it needs an AV processor in front of it and speakers to drive.

Brief product overview

A 7-channel solid-state power amplifier rated at 200 watts per channel, with McIntosh’s Autoformer output delivering full power into 2, 4 or 8 ohms alike on every channel. Power Guard prevents audible clipping and Sentry Monitor protects each channel. There are balanced and unbalanced inputs, Solid Cinch binding posts, and McIntosh’s watt meters. The chassis carries the black glass front panel with the illuminated logo, and it is built in Binghamton, New York, where they have been building them since 1949.

How it sounds

The MC8207 brings McIntosh’s composed, authoritative character to a full home cinema, driving seven channels with the Autoformer output’s grip on demanding speakers and the headroom to stay unstrained through big soundtracks. Two hundred watts a channel give a large system real scale and impact, and the quality carries through to multichannel and stereo music. As a power amplifier its character comes from the processor and speakers it partners, but it supplies seven channels of genuine McIntosh power.

What we’d partner it with

The MC8207 needs an AV processor and speakers. It pairs with McIntosh’s AV processors, the MX200, MX123A or MX180, driving the main seven channels, with a further amplifier for the surround or overhead channels of a larger layout. For speakers, a timbre-matched package from Sonus faber, Focal, Monitor Audio, KEF or Fyne Audio, with subwoofers from REL, SVS or KEF, completes the system.

Who shouldn’t buy it

If a 5.1 system is all you need, the 5-channel MC255 covers it for less. If you want more power on the front three channels, the MC257 gives 250 watts there, or the MC303 provides reference 300-watt power on those channels specifically. And if you would rather not run a separate amplifier, the MHT300 receiver builds amplification in.

Setup notes: The MC8207 is large and heavy and wants ventilation above and around it. Connect each speaker to the Autoformer tap that matches its impedance, and run the processor to the amplifier on balanced cables where you can. The meters and logo can be dimmed or turned off.
