Advanced RF Reception & Connectivity

The MR89 incorporates proprietary McIntosh radio frequency circuitry capable of capturing powerful FM transmissions from nearby broadcasters — which can overwhelm and introduce distortion in lesser units — while also locking onto weaker FM broadcasts located farther away with minimal to zero interference. The MR89’s sophisticated signal quality monitor can present detailed strength, multipath, and noise readings of incoming RF transmissions to assist in optimising the positioning of your AM or FM aerial.

It includes the RAA2 AM antenna featuring a 20-foot (6m) extended cable that offers versatility when situating the antenna for optimal reception; your authorised McIntosh retailer can help determine the appropriate FM antenna depending on your residence’s proximity to preferred stations. A set of balanced and unbalanced analogue outputs together with one coaxial and one optical digital output are provided to integrate the MR89 into your home sound system.

Enhanced Audio Performance & Noise Management

Numerous refinements have been implemented in the MR89 to make radio listening more engaging and enjoyable. Sensitivity, signal-to-noise ratio, harmonic distortion, channel selectivity, and stereo separation were comprehensively evaluated and carefully refined, resulting in meaningful performance gains across all parameters.

To assist with lower-grade FM stereo transmissions, Stereo Blending has been improved through the addition of a High Blend setting that merges the upper-frequency portion of the audio spectrum more assertively. The newly introduced Softmute function lowers audio output when encountering weak stations or inter-station static and interference. Another added solution to diminish noise and improve listening quality is the Highcut feature, which attenuates high-frequency audio content.

Multiple intensity levels are available for Stereo Blending, High Blend, Softmute, and Highcut to accommodate station condition and personal preference. These refinements provide greater control over challenging broadcast material.

Intelligent Tuning & Broadcast Data

AM and FM channels are selected using the fluid-operating tuning dial. The MR89 supports the FM Radio Broadcast Data System (RBDS), enabling the display to present information such as station identification, musical category, performer name, and track title when transmitted by the broadcaster.

The RBDS information screen can be customised or fully deactivated according to your preference. A Seek feature is accessible via the front panel controls or the supplied remote handset. The responsiveness of the Seek function can be adjusted within the configuration menu. The MR89 can memorise up to 20 preset channels in both AM and FM bands.

This functionality simplifies navigation between favourite stations. User controls remain intuitive and responsive.

Output Metering & Stereo Accuracy

A pair of 60dB output indicators display the signal intensity being delivered through the analogue outputs of each channel. Although volume adjustment is managed by your preamplifier, integrated amplifier, or other control component, the meters on the MR89 precisely reflect the Left and Right channel audio signal produced from the received broadcast.

Depending on the programme material, the meters serve as a visual confirmation of the MR89’s impressive stereo separation capability. They also contribute to the signature McIntosh visual identity. The metering adds both functional insight and aesthetic appeal.

Global Reception Coverage

The MR89 can receive the following FM frequency ranges utilised in the specified regions and many additional territories worldwide: 87.5MHz – 108.0MHz (Europe); 88.1MHz – 107.9MHz (USA); and 76.0MHz – 108.0MHz (Japan). For AM broadcast reception, it supports 531kHz – 1701kHz (Europe); 530kHz – 1700kHz (USA); and 531kHz – 1629kHz (Japan).
