02 · IN DETAIL

The long read.

Fyne Audio’s acoustic philosophy has always been rooted in point-source precision, and the F5e is the distillation of that concept into a highly pragmatic form factor. Designed by the ex-Tannoy engineering team in Scotland, this loudspeaker is built around the principle that all audible frequencies should originate from a single spatial axis. By placing the tweeter directly in the acoustic center of the mid-bass cone, the F5e achieves a degree of time-alignment and off-axis consistency that traditional two-way cabinets struggle to match. It is a speaker designed for listeners who prioritize spatial accuracy and vocal realism over sheer physical scale.

Brief product overview The acoustic core of the F5e is Fyne’s IsoFlare concentric driver, pairing a multi-fibre mid/bass cone with a titanium dome compression tweeter. The bass driver incorporates FyneFlute technology—a variable-geometry roll surround engineered to cleanly terminate cone energy and eliminate perimeter resonances. Low-frequency output is tuned via a downward-firing port coupled to a BassTrax Tractrix diffuser, which converts standard turbulent port energy into a smooth 360-degree spherical wavefront. The system presents an easy 8-ohm nominal load with a sensitivity of 89dB. The crossover is a low-loss, phase-coherent network housed inside an internally braced MDF enclosure finished in authentic wood veneer.

How it sounds

The immediate sonic signature of the F5e is structural cohesion. Because high and low frequencies emanate from the exact same acoustic point, stereo imaging is exceptionally precise; vocalists and center-stage instruments lock into position with holographic stability. Transients are fast and articulate, giving percussion and plucked strings a tactile, live-in-the-room presence. Treble dispersion is controlled and linear, avoiding the glare or horn-flare shout sometimes encountered in concentric designs. Low frequencies are fast, musical, and pitch-accurate rather than cavernously deep; the BassTrax diffuser loads the room evenly, preserving midrange clarity and keeping basslines distinct and textured.

What we’d partner it with

The F5e’s high sensitivity makes it an ideal partner for modern, high-efficiency Class-D amplification, making the WiiM Amp Pro a particularly synergistic match. The WiiM provides clean, low-distortion power with enough damping factor to keep tight control over the IsoFlare woofer while giving the titanium compression driver room to articulate fine detail. Because the F5e reveals source quality without flattery, the Amp Pro’s premium onboard ESS DAC ensures clean, jitter-free digital playback. Introducing the Rega Planar 1 Plus injects rich analog timing and midrange body; the Rega’s rhythmic drive balances the speaker’s agility, yielding a complete vinyl-and-streaming ecosystem with minimal hardware footprint.

Who shouldn’t buy it

If you have a listening space larger than 30 square meters and require physical, sub-bass slam for electronic music or large-scale orchestral climaxes, the F5e will sound physically out of scale unless paired with an active subwoofer; you should step up to the F501 or F502 floorstanders. Additionally, if your preference leans toward an overly warm, rolled-off, or heavily forgiving “vintage” presentation, this speaker is not for you. It is a fast, transparent monitor that reports upstream source quality honestly rather than masking it.

Useful Notes

The F5e is designed for stands. Place them with the IsoFlare driver near ear level. Thanks to the downward-firing BassTrax port, they are highly forgiving of rear-wall proximity, though leaving a little space will open up soundstage depth. Apply only a slight toe-in, as the concentric driver has wide, uniform dispersion. For vinyl, connect the Rega Planar 1 Plus directly into the WiiM Amp Pro’s analog RCA inputs, as the turntable has its own built-in phono stage. Finally, use the WiiM app to adjust the line-in gain to match your streaming volume.
