02 · IN DETAIL

The long read.

The Vintage Classic VIII SM is the standmount in Fyne Audio’s Vintage Classic range, a line that wraps Fyne’s modern point-source engineering in a heritage-styled cabinet, walnut veneer with a black baffle. It is a two-way standmount built around the IsoFlare point-source driver, a 25mm magnesium dome compression tweeter sitting at the acoustic centre of a 200mm bass and midrange cone, so the two radiate as a single time-aligned source. The look is classic, the engineering current, and at 91dB and 8 ohms it is an easy, forgiving load that pairs particularly happily with valve amplification. It suits a small-to-medium room and the retro-styled system it is designed to anchor.

Brief product overview

A two-way standmount using a 200mm IsoFlare point-source driver, a 25mm magnesium dome compression tweeter with a ferrite magnet system mounted concentrically within a multi-fibre bass and midrange cone. The crossover works at 1.8kHz, and the cabinet vents through a down-firing port with Fyne’s BassTrax Tractrix diffuser, engineered for placement on stands. Sensitivity is 91dB at 2.83V/1m into an 8-ohm nominal load, an easy amplifier partner, and recommended power runs from 30 to 180 watts. Frequency response is quoted at 34Hz to 34kHz, minus 6dB typical in room. It measures 540 by 330 by 294mm and weighs 16.1kg each, finished in walnut veneer with a black baffle.

How it sounds

The point-source driver gives the Vintage Classic VIII SM its coherence and its wide, stable image, treble and midrange arriving from one place so the sound holds together across the room. It is an even, room-friendly presentation with useful weight for a standmount, and its 91dB sensitivity and benign load make it flexible about amplification, coming alive on modest valve power as readily as on solid-state. Bass reaches to around 34Hz from the down-firing port. The honest limits are the ones every standmount shares: it will not fill a large room or plumb the lowest octave the way a floorstander does, so it is happiest in a small-to-medium space where its coherence and its looks count for most.

What we’d partner it with

The VIII SM’s easy 91dB, 8-ohm load makes it a natural valve partner. The Fezz Audio Titania leads, a KT88 valve integrated with line inputs only, no phono and no streaming. As alternative valve integrateds, stock permitting, the Fezz Silver Luna Prestige suits the load at lower power, and a McIntosh MA252 adds a moving-magnet phono stage and a touch more power.

Because the Titania has no streaming, a streamer is added. The Eversolo DMP-A8 Gen 2 leads as a streamer, DAC and preamplifier into a line input; alternatives, stock permitting, are the HiFi Rose RS151 and a Bluesound Node.

For vinyl, the Titania has no phono stage, so one is added. The Fezz Audio Gaia Mini leads, matched to the Pro-Ject The Classic Evo and its Ortofon Quintet Red moving-coil cartridge; alternative phono stages, stock permitting, are the Pro-Ject Phono Box RS and a Rega Aria. As an alternative deck, a Rega Planar 6 is worth a stock check.

On cabling, use a well-made speaker cable of appropriate gauge. AudioQuest and Chord are the cable brands we stock.

Who shouldn’t buy it

If you want more bass and scale, the floorstanding Vintage Classic VIII uses the same drive units in a larger cabinet, and the Vintage Classic X and XII step up further for bigger rooms. If your amplifier is genuinely low-powered the 91dB sensitivity is forgiving, but a standmount will always want stands and a suitable room, so factor those in. And if you prefer modern styling to the heritage look, Fyne’s F700 and F1 ranges offer the same point-source engineering in a contemporary cabinet.

Useful Notes

The Vintage Classic VIII SM is a standmount and wants solid stands that bring the tweeter close to ear level; a matching pair of stands is worth adding if you do not already have them. Place it clear of the rear wall where you can and toe it in towards the listening seat to lock in the point-source image. It is ported downward, so it is fairly tolerant of position, but a little space still helps the bass. Set the Eversolo DMP-A8 Gen 2 up on the network, ideally wired, and connect it to a line input on the Titania. For vinyl, connect the Pro-Ject The Classic Evo to the Fezz Gaia Mini, set the stage to moving-coil to suit the Ortofon Quintet Red, and run the Gaia Mini into a line input on the Titania; fit the turntable’s earth lead to the phono stage’s ground terminal. As a valve amplifier, the Titania wants a little ventilation around it.
