The long read.
The F703 sits in the middle of Fyne Audio’s F700 series, above the compact F702 and below the flagship F704, and it is the point in the range where the cabinet grows large enough to move real air without yet reaching flagship size or price. It is a substantial two-and-a-half-way floorstander built around Fyne’s IsoFlare point-source driver, the design that places the tweeter at the acoustic centre of the midrange cone so the two behave as a single source. At 48kg each and nearly 1.2 metres tall it is a serious speaker that wants a proper room, and it is honest about that: this is not a speaker for a box room or for placement squeezed against furniture. Given space and a competent amplifier it produces the coherent, room-filling sound that is the reason to buy point-source designs in the first place.
Brief product overview
A two-and-a-half-way floorstander using a 250mm IsoFlare point-source driver, a 75mm titanium dome compression tweeter mounted concentrically at the centre of a 250mm multifibre midbass cone, with a separate 250mm multifibre bass driver handling the low end. The passive crossover works at 200Hz and 850Hz and the speaker can be bi-wired. Sensitivity is a high 94dB at 2.83V/1m into an 8-ohm nominal load, so it is an easy amplifier partner, and recommended power runs from 20 to 250 watts. Frequency response is quoted at 26Hz to 26kHz, measured at minus 6dB in room. The cabinet is a twin-cavity tuned enclosure with a down-firing port carrying Fyne’s BassTrax Tractrix diffuser, which spreads port output evenly into the room rather than firing it in one direction. Finishes are Piano Gloss Black, Walnut and White. It is designed and engineered in Scotland.
How it sounds
The defining quality is coherence. Because the tweeter fires from the centre of the midrange cone, the F703 images as a single point rather than as separate drivers you can pick out, and it holds that image across a wide listening area rather than collapsing the moment you move off the central seat. The 94dB sensitivity gives it an easy, unforced dynamic quality; it comes alive at low volumes and has headroom to spare with any reasonable amplifier, which is unusual at this size. Bass is genuinely deep and, thanks to the down-firing BassTrax port, less fussy about position than most large ported floorstanders, though it still needs room to breathe. The honest limits are physical rather than sonic: this is a big, heavy speaker, and in a small room it will overwhelm the space and the bass will dominate. Give it a medium-to-large room and it scales up convincingly.
What we’d partner it with
The F703’s high sensitivity and benign 8-ohm load mean the amplifier does not need to be powerful, only good. The F703’s high 94dB sensitivity and easy 8-ohm load mean the amplifier is chosen for quality. The McIntosh MSA5500 is the natural single-box answer, a streaming integrated with a 32-bit DAC and a moving-magnet phono stage on board. As alternatives in the same one-box mould, stock permitting, the Audiolab 9000A also folds in streaming and a moving-magnet phono stage, while the Hegel H390 brings exceptional grip and its own streaming, though you would add a phono stage for vinyl.
For vinyl, the built-in moving-magnet phono stage sets the cartridge. The Linn Majik LP12 with its moving-magnet Adikt connects straight in, and as alternative moving-magnet decks, stock permitting, the Rega Planar 8 and the Technics SL-1500C both suit the MSA5500’s phono input.
On cabling, use a well-made speaker cable of appropriate gauge, bearing in mind the bi-wire terminals. AudioQuest and Chord are the cable brands we stock.
Who shouldn’t buy it
If your room is small, the F703 is too much speaker and the bass will dominate; the F702 gives you the same IsoFlare presentation in a smaller cabinet for less, and the standmount F701 covers genuinely compact rooms. If you have a large room, listen at high levels, or simply want the fullest expression of the design, the flagship F704 adds driver area, deeper bass and greater scale for more money. And if you were hoping to drive these from a very low-powered amplifier in a tiny space, the issue is not the amplifier, which the 94dB sensitivity makes easy, but the room, which needs to be big enough for a speaker of this size.
One loudspeaker, two complete systems. Here’s how we’d build around it.
The Streaming System
A 100-watt streaming integrated with onboard DAC and phono stage driving a 94dB point-source floorstander.
The Analogue Extension
The same amplifier and speakers with a Linn Majik LP12 into the built-in moving-magnet phono input.
Useful Notes
The F703 is a floorstander and ships with its plinth and floor spikes or feet to be fitted; give it room to breathe, ideally clear of side and rear walls, and toe it in towards the listening seat to lock in the point-source image. The down-firing BassTrax port makes it more tolerant of position than most large ported speakers, but it still wants space in a medium-to-large room. Leave the bi-wire jumpers fitted unless you intend to run two cable pairs. Set the McIntosh MSA5500 up through its network for Roon and the streaming services, using a wired connection where you can, and connect a television to the HDMI ARC input if you want one in the system. For vinyl, connect the Majik LP12 to the phono (MM) input and its earth lead to the ground terminal; the built-in moving-magnet stage means no separate phono preamp is needed.
