The long read.
The Vintage Classic X is the middle floorstander in Fyne Audio’s Vintage Classic range, above the Vintage Classic VIII and below the XII, and it steps up from the VIII to a larger 250mm point-source driver in a bigger cabinet. Like the rest of the range it wraps Fyne’s modern point-source engineering in a heritage-styled cabinet, walnut veneer with gold trim and a black baffle. The driver is the IsoFlare design, a 75mm titanium alloy dome compression tweeter sitting at the acoustic centre of a 250mm bass and midrange cone, so the whole output radiates from a single point. At 94dB and 8 ohms it is a high-sensitivity, easy load that flatters good amplification and comes alive on modest power, and at 45kg it is a proper floorstander for a medium-to-large room.
Brief product overview
A two-way floorstander built around a single 250mm IsoFlare point-source driver, a 75mm titanium alloy dome compression tweeter mounted concentrically within a multi-fibre bass and midrange cone. The crossover works at 750Hz, second order, and the low frequencies come from a braced cabinet with a down-firing BassTrax Tractrix port. Sensitivity is a high 94dB at 2.83V/1m into an 8-ohm nominal load, so it is an easy amplifier partner, and recommended power runs from 20 to 280 watts. Frequency response is quoted at 28Hz to 26kHz, minus 6dB typical in room. It stands 918mm tall and weighs 45.2kg each, finished in walnut veneer with gold trim and a black baffle.
How it sounds
The single-driver point-source design gives the Vintage Classic X its coherence and its wide, stable image, treble and midrange arriving from one place so the sound holds together across the room. Stepping up from the VIII, the larger 250mm driver brings more scale, more bass and greater ease, reaching to 28Hz, and the 94dB sensitivity makes it dynamic and responsive on modest power, valve or solid-state alike. The honest limit is room size: this is a full-height floorstander with real bass, so it wants a medium-to-large room to open up, and in a small space its low end will dominate. Given the room, it combines heritage looks with genuinely modern point-source performance.
What we’d partner it with
The Vintage Classic X’s high 94dB sensitivity and easy 8-ohm load let the amplifier be chosen for quality. The Yamaha A-S3200 is our lead choice, a 100-watt pure analogue integrated with balanced inputs and both moving-magnet and moving-coil phono stages, but no DAC or streaming. As alternative analogue integrateds at this level, stock permitting, the McIntosh MA352 brings a hybrid valve preamp stage and a moving-magnet phono stage, and the Musical Fidelity Nu-Vista also carries its own phono stage.
Because the A-S3200 has no streaming, the digital source is separate. The Eversolo DMP-A8 Gen 2 leads, a streamer, DAC and preamplifier into a line input; as alternatives, stock permitting, the HiFi Rose RS151 and the Aurender N200 do the same job.
For vinyl, the A-S3200’s phono stage takes both types, so a turntable connects directly. The Clearaudio Performance DC leads, and as it is sold in various tonearm and cartridge configurations we would specify it with a Clearaudio cartridge, a Maestro V2 moving-magnet or a Concept moving-coil, into the matching phono setting. As alternative decks, stock permitting, a Rega Planar 10 with an Apheta 3, or a Technics SL-1210GR with an Ortofon 2M Black, are worth a stock check.
On cabling, use a well-made speaker cable of appropriate gauge. AudioQuest and Chord are the cable brands we stock.
One loudspeaker, two complete systems. Here’s how we’d build around it.
The Streaming System
A streamer and DAC into a 100-watt analogue integrated, driving a 94dB point-source floorstander.
The Analogue Extension
A streamer and DAC into a 100-watt analogue integrated, driving a 94dB point-source floorstander.
The Analogue Extension
A turntable into the amplifier’s built-in moving-magnet and moving-coil phono stage.
Useful Notes
The Vintage Classic X is a floorstander and ships with its spikes or feet to be fitted; place it clear of side and rear walls where you can and toe it in towards the listening seat to lock in the point-source image. The down-firing BassTrax port helps with placement, but the bass still wants room to breathe. Set the Eversolo DMP-A8 Gen 2 up on the network, ideally wired, and connect it to a line input on the A-S3200. For vinyl, connect the Clearaudio Performance DC to the amplifier’s phono input, set it to moving-magnet or moving-coil to suit the fitted cartridge, and fit the earth lead to the ground terminal.
