The long read.
The Vintage Classic XII is the flagship of Fyne Audio’s Vintage Classic range, above the X and the VIII, and it is built around a single 300mm IsoFlare point-source driver, a 75mm titanium alloy dome compression tweeter sitting at the acoustic centre of the bass and midrange cone, so the whole output radiates from one point. Like the rest of the range it wraps that modern engineering in a heritage-styled cabinet, walnut veneer in a period look. At 54.5kg it is a large floorstander for a medium-to-large room, and at 96dB and 8 ohms it is a very high-sensitivity, easy load, the sort of speaker that flatters good amplification and comes alive on modest power, valve amplification included.
Brief product overview
A two-way floorstander built around a single 300mm IsoFlare point-source driver, a 75mm titanium alloy dome compression tweeter mounted concentrically within a multi-fibre bass and midrange cone. The crossover works at 750Hz, and high-frequency and presence controls each allow plus or minus 3dB of adjustment to tune the balance to the room. The low frequencies come from a cabinet with a down-firing BassTrax Tractrix port. Sensitivity is a very high 96dB at 2.83V/1m into an 8-ohm nominal load, so it is an exceptionally easy amplifier partner, and recommended power runs from 20 to 350 watts. Frequency response is quoted at 25Hz to 26kHz, minus 6dB typical in room. It stands 948mm tall and weighs 54.5kg each, finished in walnut veneer.
How it sounds
The single-driver point-source design gives the Vintage Classic XII its coherence and its wide, stable image, treble and midrange arriving from one place so the sound holds together across the room. The larger 300mm driver brings the range’s fullest scale, bass and ease, reaching to 25Hz, and the 96dB sensitivity makes it effortlessly dynamic on modest power. The presence and high-frequency controls let you match it to a bright or a dull room. The honest limit is room size: this is a large flagship floorstander with deep bass, so it wants a medium-to-large room, and in a small space its low end will overwhelm the room. Given the space, it combines heritage looks with genuinely modern point-source performance.
What we’d partner it with
The Vintage Classic XII’s very high 96dB sensitivity and easy 8-ohm load let the amplifier be chosen for character, and it is a natural valve partner. The McIntosh MA352 is our lead choice, a hybrid integrated with a valve preamplifier stage, a 200-watt solid-state output and a moving-magnet phono stage, but no DAC or streaming. As alternative integrateds at this level, stock permitting, the Yamaha A-S3200 adds moving-coil as well as moving-magnet phono, and the all-tube McIntosh MA2375 offers a fuller valve character with both phono types.
Because the MA352 has no streaming, the digital source is separate. The HiFi Rose RS451 leads, a network streamer and DAC with its own analogue outputs into a line input; as alternatives, stock permitting, the Eversolo DMP-A8 Gen 2 and the Aurender N200 do the same job.
For vinyl, one point matters: the MA352’s phono stage is moving-magnet only, so the cartridge must be moving-magnet. The Thorens TD 1601 with its TP 160 tonearm leads, supplied without a cartridge, so we would fit a moving-magnet cartridge such as an Ortofon 2M Bronze straight into the MA352’s phono input. As alternative moving-magnet decks, stock permitting, a Rega Planar 8 with an Exact, or a Clearaudio Performance DC in its moving-magnet form, are worth a stock check.
On cabling, use a well-made speaker cable of appropriate gauge. AudioQuest and Chord are the cable brands we stock.
One loudspeaker, two complete systems. Here’s how we’d build around it.
The Streaming System
A streamer and DAC into a 200-watt hybrid valve McIntosh integrated, driving a 96dB point-source floorstander.
The Analogue Extension
A belt-drive turntable with a moving-magnet cartridge into the amplifier’s moving-magnet phono stage.
Useful Notes
The Vintage Classic XII is a large floorstander and ships with its spikes or feet to be fitted; place it clear of side and rear walls where you can and toe it in towards the listening seat to lock in the point-source image, using the presence and high-frequency controls on the rear to trim the balance to the room. The down-firing BassTrax port helps with placement, but the deep bass still wants room to breathe. Set the HiFi Rose RS451 up on the network, ideally wired, and connect it to a line input on the MA352. For vinyl, fit a moving-magnet cartridge to the Thorens TD 1601, connect it to the MA352’s phono input, and fit the earth lead to the ground terminal; the phono stage is moving-magnet only. As a hybrid valve amplifier, the MA352 wants a little ventilation around it.
