The long read.
The Vintage Fifteen is the flagship of Fyne Audio’s Vintage range, described by Fyne as the full embodiment of Dr Paul Mills’ design approach, and it is built around a single 380mm IsoFlare point-source driver, a full 15 inches, with a 75mm titanium dome compression tweeter and a neodymium motor at the acoustic centre of the bass and midrange cone, so the whole output radiates from one point. It wraps that engineering in the Vintage Series’ heritage cabinet. At 92.9kg and nearly 700mm across the baffle this is a very large speaker for a large, dedicated room, and it is honest about that. At 97dB and 8 ohms it is one of the most sensitive and easiest loads you will find, coming alive on the smallest amount of power.
Brief product overview
A two-way floorstander built around a single 380mm IsoFlare point-source driver, a 75mm titanium dome compression tweeter with a neodymium motor mounted concentrically within a multi-fibre bass and midrange cone. The crossover works at 750Hz, with deep cryogenic treatment. The low frequencies come from a cabinet with a down-firing BassTrax Tractrix port. Sensitivity is a very high 97dB at 2.83V/1m into an 8-ohm nominal load, so it is an exceptionally easy amplifier partner, and recommended power runs from 20 to 400 watts. Frequency response is quoted at 22Hz to 26kHz, minus 6dB typical in room. It measures 1152 by 683 by 691mm and weighs 92.9kg each, in a birch-ply cabinet with walnut veneer and solid walnut trim.
How it sounds
The single 15-inch point-source driver gives the Vintage Fifteen its defining coherence and its scale: with one radiating point and a large cone, the sound arrives as a single event, imaging precisely while moving real air. The 97dB sensitivity makes it effortlessly dynamic and responsive to the smallest shifts, and it plays loud from very little power, which is why it partners so happily with valve amplification. Bass reaches to 22Hz from a single large driver, so it goes deep and full without separate woofers, and the presence and high-frequency controls match it to the room. The honest limit is scale and room: this is a very large, sensitive speaker that needs space and a substantial room to come together, and in anything smaller its bass and physical presence will dominate.
What we’d partner it with
The Vintage Fifteen’s very high 97dB sensitivity and easy 8-ohm load mean amplification is chosen for character, and it is an ideal home for valves. The McIntosh MC1502 is a stereo vacuum-tube power amplifier delivering 150 watts per channel, vast headroom against a 97dB speaker, and it takes a preamplifier ahead of it, which is where the two systems diverge by character. For digital, the McIntosh CS7500 is a solid-state streaming preamplifier that brings network streaming, a DAC and moving-magnet and moving-coil phono into one unit. For vinyl, the McIntosh C2800 is a vacuum-tube preamplifier with two configurable moving-magnet and moving-coil phono inputs and its own DAC, making an all-valve front end with the MC1502. As alternatives to the power amplifier, stock permitting, a pair of McIntosh MC611 monoblocks steps the power up with either preamp.
The CS7500 streams on its own, so the digital system needs no separate streamer; the C2800 is not a network streamer, so to stream through it you would add a McIntosh DS200 or a HiFi Rose RS151, stock permitting.
For vinyl, both preamplifiers take moving-coil cartridges. The Linn Selekt LP12 is supplied with Linn’s Krystal moving-coil cartridge, into the C2800’s moving-coil input. As alternative decks and cartridges, stock permitting, a Rega Naia with an Aphelion 2, or a Thorens TD 124 DD with an SPU 124, are worth a stock check.
On cabling, use well-made speaker and interconnect cable of appropriate gauge, and note the bi-wire terminals. AudioQuest and Chord are the cable brands we stock.
Who shouldn’t buy it
If your room is large but not vast, the Vintage Twelve and Vintage Ten step down the range with smaller drivers and cabinets, and the standmount Vintage Five suits small rooms. If you would rather have separate bass drivers for outright low-end slam, the single-driver Vintage Fifteen trades ultimate bass weight for coherence. And if you prefer a different aesthetic, the Vintage Classic Gold XV SP and the F1-12S offer related flagship point-source designs in other cabinets. This is a flagship for a large, dedicated room, so match the speaker to the space rather than buy the largest model by default.
One loudspeaker, two complete systems. Here’s how we’d build around it.
The Streaming System
A solid-state streaming preamplifier and 150-watt tube power amplifier driving a 97dB point-source floorstander.
The Analogue Extension
A solid-state streaming preamplifier and 150-watt tube power amplifier driving a 97dB point-source floorstander.
The Analogue Extension
An all-valve preamplifier and power amplifier with a Linn Selekt LP12 and its moving-coil cartridge into the preamplifier’s phono stage.
Useful Notes
The Vintage Fifteen is a very large, heavy floorstander and needs a planned, permanent position with room to breathe, clear of side and rear walls, toed in towards the listening seat to lock in the point-source image, using the presence and high-frequency controls on the rear to trim the balance to the room. The port helps with placement, but the deep bass still wants a large room. Whichever preamplifier you run drives the MC1502, which connects to the speakers. For streaming, set the CS7500 up on the network, ideally wired. For vinyl, connect the Linn Selekt LP12 to the C2800’s moving-coil phono input, adjust the gain and loading for the Krystal cartridge, and fit the earth lead to the ground terminal. Leave the bi-wire jumpers fitted unless you intend two cable runs per speaker. As tube components, the C2800 and MC1502 want a little ventilation around them.
