02 · IN DETAIL

The long read.

The Vintage Twelve sits near the top of Fyne Audio’s Vintage range, above the Vintage Ten and below the flagship Vintage Fifteen, and it takes the acoustic design of Fyne’s F1-12S and wraps it in the Vintage Series’ heritage cabinet. It is a purist design: a single 300mm IsoFlare point-source driver and nothing else, a 75mm titanium alloy dome compression tweeter sitting at the acoustic centre of the bass and midrange cone, so the whole output radiates from one point. At 77kg it is a large speaker for a large room, and at 96dB and 8 ohms it is a very high-sensitivity, easy load, coming alive on modest power and partnering happily with valve amplification.

Brief product overview

A two-way floorstander built around a single 300mm IsoFlare point-source driver, a 75mm titanium alloy dome compression tweeter mounted concentrically within a multi-fibre bass and midrange cone. The crossover works at 750Hz, bi-wired, with deep cryogenic treatment, and high-frequency and presence controls adjust the balance to the room. The low frequencies come from a cabinet with a down-firing BassTrax Tractrix port. Sensitivity is a very high 96dB at 2.83V/1m into an 8-ohm nominal load, so it is an exceptionally easy amplifier partner, and recommended power runs from 20 to 350 watts. Frequency response is quoted at 24Hz to 26kHz, minus 6dB typical in room. It measures 1102 by 572 by 591mm and weighs 77.1kg each, in a birch-ply cabinet with walnut veneer and solid walnut trim.

How it sounds

The single-driver point-source design gives the Vintage Twelve its coherence and its scale: with one radiating point and a large cone, the sound arrives as a single event, imaging precisely while moving real air. The 96dB sensitivity makes it effortlessly dynamic and responsive to the smallest shifts, and it plays loud from very little power. Bass reaches to 24Hz from a single large driver, so it goes deep and full without separate woofers, and the presence and high-frequency controls match it to the room. The honest limit is scale and room: this is a large, sensitive speaker that needs space and a substantial room to come together, and in anything smaller its bass and physical presence will dominate.

What we’d partner it with

The Vintage Twelve’s very high 96dB sensitivity and easy 8-ohm load mean amplification is chosen for character rather than power. The McIntosh MC312 is a 300-watt solid-state power amplifier, ample and composed, and it takes a preamplifier ahead of it, which is where the two systems diverge by character. For digital, the McIntosh CS7500 is a solid-state streaming preamplifier that brings network streaming, a DAC and a moving-magnet and moving-coil phono stage into one unit. For vinyl, the McIntosh C22 Mk V is a vacuum-tube preamplifier with its own moving-magnet and moving-coil phono stages, adding valve character to the front end. As alternatives to the power amplifier, stock permitting, a McIntosh MC1502 tube amplifier or a pair of MC611 monoblocks suit the same preamps.

The CS7500 streams on its own, so the digital system needs no separate streamer; if you would rather run a streamer into the C22, the McIntosh DS200 or the HiFi Rose RS151 are the choices, stock permitting.

For vinyl, the C22 Mk V’s phono stages take both cartridge types. The Thorens TD 124 DD is a direct-drive deck supplied with its TP 124 tonearm but without a cartridge, so the Thorens SPU 124, an Ortofon SPU-type moving-coil, is the matched choice into the moving-coil input. As alternative decks, stock permitting, a Rega Planar 10 with an Apheta 3 or a Linn Selekt LP12 with a Krystal are worth a stock check.

On cabling, use well-made speaker and interconnect cable of appropriate gauge, and note the bi-wire terminals. AudioQuest and Chord are the cable brands we stock.

Who shouldn’t buy it

If your room is large but not vast, the Vintage Ten steps down the range with a smaller driver, and the standmount Vintage Five suits small rooms. If you want the very largest model, the flagship Vintage Fifteen sits above it. If you would rather have separate bass drivers for outright low-end slam, the single-driver Vintage Twelve trades ultimate bass weight for coherence. And if you prefer modern styling, Fyne’s F1-12S offers the same acoustic design in a contemporary cabinet.

Useful Notes

The Vintage Twelve is a large, heavy floorstander and needs a planned, permanent position with room to breathe, clear of side and rear walls, toed in towards the listening seat to lock in the point-source image, using the presence and high-frequency controls on the rear to trim the balance to the room. The down-firing BassTrax port helps with placement, but the deep bass still wants a large room. Whichever preamplifier you run drives the MC312, which connects to the speakers. For streaming, set the CS7500 up on the network, ideally wired. For vinyl, connect the Thorens TD 124 DD to the C22 Mk V’s moving-coil phono input, adjust the loading for the SPU 124, and fit the earth lead to the ground terminal. Leave the bi-wire jumpers fitted unless you intend two cable runs per speaker. As tube components, the C22 wants a little ventilation around it.
