Hand-Assembled Precision in Japan

Each Oriole cartridge is meticulously hand-assembled in Yokohama by the craftsmen at Excel Sound, reflecting nearly four decades of collaboration. Every unit undergoes microscopic inspection and rigorous testing for electrical balance, channel separation, trackability, and compliance with strict performance standards.

The open-body Reference Series architecture reduces housing-induced resonance and coloration, reinforcing purity and structural integrity.

Nude Shibata Stylus & Reinforced Cantilever

At its core is a nude Shibata line-contact stylus, precision-cut from a single piece of natural diamond (6.5µm x 40µm). This profile traces fine groove modulations with exceptional accuracy while maintaining a smooth, musically engaging character.

Mounted to a hollow, alloy-reinforced aluminium cantilever, the reduced moving mass enables fast, precise transmission of groove information. The extended frequency response of 12Hz–45kHz captures subtle textures, harmonic overtones, and micro-dynamics with realism.

Advanced Low-Impedance Generator

Oriole’s low internal impedance of 5.5Ω is achieved through fewer turns of high-purity copper coil wire, shortening the signal path and improving speed and resolution. Individually wound cross-coils ensure balanced signal transfer, while the magnetic circuit employs a warm-sounding Alnico magnet with pure iron yokes and pole pieces.

Delivering a 0.3mV low-output signal, the generator combines clarity, dynamic authority, and coherence. A purpose-selected synthetic rubber MC damper enhances resonance control and stable tracking within the recommended 1.8–2.2g tracking force range.

Structural Integrity & Resonance Control

Resonance management is central to Oriole’s design. The open-body structure minimizes vibration typically amplified by enclosed housings, while internally damped magnetic components further suppress unwanted energy.

PEEK terminal and mounting plates—an aerospace-grade material known for mechanical stability—provide a rigid yet controlled pathway for energy dissipation through the tonearm. This multi-layered approach ensures clarity, tonal balance, and long-term reliability.

Technical Performance & Compatibility

Oriole offers 30dB channel separation at 1kHz and precise 0.5dB channel balance for accurate stereo imaging. Compliance is rated at 12 x 10⁻⁶ cm/dyne (100Hz), with tracking ability of 70μm at 315Hz using 2g vertical tracking force.

Weighing 7.3g with a 20° vertical tracking angle, it integrates seamlessly with a wide range of high-quality tonearms. Designed for load impedances above 60Ω, it delivers both technical precision and emotionally engaging analogue playback.
