Headphone cables are used to connect wired headphones, in-ear monitors and headphone amplifiers, either as a direct replacement for a damaged cable or as an upgrade for a better match with your listening setup. The right cable depends on your headphone model, connector type and source, with common options including 3.5mm, 6.35mm, 2.5mm balanced, 4.4mm balanced, 4-pin XLR, dual 3.5mm, 2-pin and MMCX connections.
A good headphone cable should be chosen for compatibility first. Many headphones use their own socket design, so it is worth checking whether you need a brand-specific replacement headphone cable, an IEM cable, or a cable designed for a particular brand. Cable length also matters. A shorter cable can be neater for portable listening, while a longer cable is often more comfortable when listening from a hi-fi rack, desktop DAC or dedicated headphone amplifier.
Balanced headphone cables are popular with listeners using compatible DACs, portable players and headphone amps. These usually use 2.5mm, 4.4mm Pentaconn or 4-pin XLR terminations and can help make the most of equipment designed with balanced headphone outputs. Standard single-ended cables, usually with 3.5mm or 6.35mm jack plugs, remain the most widely compatible choice.
