Optical cables, often called Toslink cables or digital optical audio cables, are used to carry a digital audio signal between compatible hi-fi, home cinema and TV equipment. They are a common choice for connecting a TV, CD transport, games console, streamer, soundbar, DAC or AV receiver, especially when you want a clean digital link without relying on an analogue audio output.
Unlike RCA interconnects, an optical audio cable transfers the signal using light through a fibre core. This means it is not affected by electrical interference in the same way as a conventional copper audio cable, which can be useful in systems with several mains-powered components close together. A good Toslink cable will also have well-made plugs, accurate termination and a suitable level of flexibility, helping it sit neatly behind equipment without putting strain on the socket.
Choosing the right digital optical cable is partly about compatibility and partly about build quality. Most full-size optical inputs and outputs use standard Toslink connectors, while some compact devices use mini-Toslink, often through a 3.5mm-style optical output. It is also worth checking the length you need before ordering, as a cable that is too short can pull on the connection, while a much longer cable may be awkward to route.
