A few things we get asked most often. If your question isn't here, our team is happy to talk it through.
Most three-way floorstanders work in rooms from around 18 m² upwards. Smaller rooms can absolutely take them — provided you can pull them at least 60 cm clear of the back wall and sit roughly the same distance from each speaker as they are apart. If your room is smaller than 14 m², bookshelf speakers on stands will usually sound better.
Almost never for music. A well-set-up pair of floorstanders will reach down to 35–40 Hz, which covers all but the lowest organ pedals and synth bass. For film soundtracks you may still want a sub for the bottom octave (16–35 Hz). We’re happy to talk through whether your system needs one.
Sensitivity matters more than wattage. A speaker rated 90 dB / 1 W needs roughly half the power of one rated 87 dB to play the same volume. As a starting point, look for an amplifier rated for double the speaker’s minimum recommended power — headroom is what stops sound becoming “shouty” at higher volumes.
Front-ported and sealed designs are usually happy 30 cm out. Rear-ported designs almost always want 50–80 cm. Toe them in so the tweeter axes cross just behind the listening seat — this widens the sweet spot without dulling the treble.
Different, not better. Floorstanders have larger cabinet volumes and more drivers, which means deeper bass and higher maximum volume. Good bookshelf speakers on proper stands can out-image floorstanders in a small to medium room. We have both side-by-side in the listening room — bring along a few records you know well.

To achieve the best performance from your floorstanding speakers, it’s important to decouple them from the floor. Using isolation spikes or feet helps minimize vibration transfer by reducing the surface area in contact with the floor, resulting in tighter, more controlled sound. If you have wooden floors or want to avoid potential damage, floor protectors can be placed under the spikes to act as a barrier and preserve your flooring.
Floorstanders are typically more sensitive than bookshelf speakers, meaning they require less power to achieve higher volumes. This makes them compatible with a wider range of amplifiers, including lower-powered models, without compromising performance. Because they move more air in the room while consuming similar power to smaller speakers, floorstanders can be surprisingly efficient and impactful.
For optimal sound quality, positioning is key. Floorstanding speakers usually benefit from a bit of space around them to avoid reflections from back walls, which can lead to bass buildup or muddiness. While some models feature front-facing or downward-firing bass ports—allowing for closer wall placement—most will perform best when given room to breathe.
