The new all-in-one headphone amp and streamer from NaimSharon Hanson
Headphone fans rejoice, as the multi-award-winning Naim Uniti Atom has just got even better with the release of the all-new ‘Headphone Edition’. In place of the speaker output stages and power amplifier, Naim has put the headphone output, along with three headphone sockets on the front panel as well as a balanced 4-pin XLR and Pentaconn.
The standard model Uniti Atom has a headphone amplifier that feeds a 3.5mm jack. However, the new Headphone Edition has been completely reengineered to distribute a much more sophisticated and immersive headphone listening experience.
The technology in this new unit comes in some part from Naim’s flagship ‘Statement’ amplifier. This distinct new headphone amp is more than capable of managing even the most premium of headphones. The Atom also boasts an updated transformer design providing power to the brand new transistor circuit design.
This new Headphone Edition is a fully-formed music system complete with ample connections and a plethora of built-in streaming solutions. Naim’s streaming platform is a portal to streaming services such as Spotify, Tidal and Qobuz, as well as DLNA playback and internet radio. It also comes with built-in Chromecast and offers support for AirPlay 2 and Roon.
Both digital and analogue connections are available including RCA and phono, coaxial, optical and USB for additional source connections. Whilst the new Atom HE is designed with headphone users in mind, it can still be utilised as a perfectly capable streaming preamplifier, connected to either a pair of active speakers or a power amp.
And there we have it. Yet another desirable addition to the Naim Uniti range. The Headphone edition is available now and offers something markedly different to the headphone/preamp hi-fi market.
This is an incredibly versatile unit that not only offers a range of connections but is also suitable for use alone with headphones or with a power amp or active speaker system. Its simple and elegant design is easy to navigate, and whilst it has a somewhat more niche appeal than its brothers and sisters, headphone users will certainly not be disappointed with its impressive sound performance.
